Second stage, final project

It is time to publish the second stage of the final project of the JAI House. The goal was to create a conceptual model in Revit and play with lightning an camera angles.

Storyboard

  • First of all I created levels after I estimated the approximate dimensions of the house. Levels for ground floor, ceiling, roof and the upper story.
  • To get the shape of the house I used the wall-tool to get the original shape. I adjusted the hight of the walls according to the different levels.
  • When the walls were finished, I added the floor slab of the first story.
  • I added the roof for the first floor and decided not to use the roof from the first story as the floor of the mastersuite located on the second story.
  • I made a inividual floor for that room.
  • I had a some problems to adjust it accordning to the roof of the first story but i decided to place the floor slab in the same level as the walls starts.
  • I created a floor slab for the ground story, and made the silhouette of the pool as a part of the floor slab.
  • Then I added the camera views under View/3D View. I tried different angles before i made the renderings.
  • During the rendering process I adjusted the exposure several times and made two final renderings of each view. I also changed the skylight.

My creations so far...

... might not play in the same league as Mr O'Herlihy's but at least I think you will see that they are suppose to show the JAI House.

The architect behind the masterpiece...

...Is called Lorcan O'Herlihy and he is originally from Dublin, Ireland. He was born in 1959 but now lives in Los Angeles. He studied architecture in Europe during the last years of the 1970's and did also earn titles from several universities i US. During the years as an architect he has also been involved in teaching.
O'Herlihy is not only an architect but has also been developing a highly international  abstract expressionism style in painting.
He started his architecture company Lorcan O'Herlihy architects, LOHA, in 1990 and it is now also located in Los Angeles. He has received 42 awards, both national and international. O'Herlihy has also been a part of the designing teams behind the Grande Louvre Museum in Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Overview: JAI House part 2

As you can the in the site plan below the house is located in a non-flat area, in the mountains of Santa Monica. Even though the terrain is sloping my impression is that there's only one floor level in the bottom floor. The fact that there is no trees in the nearest are of the house and the slim and strecthed out swimming pool meets the hill makes the contrasts between the boxy house and the green mountains even more interesting.

If we take a closer look at the plan we notice that the more public areas of the house, where you spend time with family and friends, is located in the right part of the house. When you enter the house from outside you meet the swimmingpool first of all, then you have the living room and the open and airy kitchen. These rooms seems to blend into eachother and the patio right outside since there are giant class walls that connects the interior with the exterior. We find the private part and the childrens bedrooms to the left and in the end there is a yoga studio. Between the yoga studio and the bedrooms there is also a patio. On the upper floor we find the master bedroom suite where the office, a closet and an open bathroom also fits in.

Where, more exactly, can I find this so called JAI House?

As I mentioned before the house is located in a village named Calabasas that is not very far from Santa Monica and Los Angeles, in the United States of America. As you can see it is not too far from the city I am
spending my semester.

California and the area close to the border between USA and Mexico.
The "A" Represents Calabasas.

Calabasas in relationship to Los Angeles, north-east of the city of Angels.

Why this blog?

Well, actually it is all about one project in a course called Digital Visualization that I take during this semester. It is an architechtural course in computing, and the final project is supposed to be presented here on this blog.
The project is about a specific building that in my case exists, and it includes research, drawing and probably a lot more that I don't know about yet.
It might also be interesting for my family and friends on the other side of the earth to read about and see what we actually learn here, and not only read about all the parties and trips we are enjoying during our spare time. I mean, after all we came here to study... or?

Overview: JAI House part 1

This is the JAI House, a one-family villa located in Calabasas, north east of Los Angeles in California. The house is designed by the architect Lorcan O´Herlihy for Julie Piatt and Richard Roll and their three children. They are both documentary filmmakers and beside the common interests in movies they are much involved in yoga. Therefore O'Herlihy designed the JAI House with both a yoga studio in the ground floor and a big screen cinema in the rooftop terrace.

The JAI House was completed in 2004. The shapes are very simple; rectangles that cross each other with details like an extra layer of dark grey wall attached to the minimalistic white box. There is of course also a swimmingpool that belongs to the house. In this case the swimmingpool cuts through the house body and makes the white rectangular main body of the house open, spacious and airy instead of compact.
